Signal / 012 — Raspberry Pi Desktop returns for PCs and Intel Macs

SYSVOID SIGNAL // HOME LAB // 07 OCTOBER 2026

That spare laptop has another possible job. Raspberry Pi announced an updated PC and Mac desktop image on October 6, based on Debian Trixie and including its Connect remote-access client.

Check the architecture first

The image now uses 64-bit amd64 rather than the older 32-bit base. Raspberry Pi says it should work on most PCs from roughly the past 15 years and most Intel Macs. Apple Silicon machines are not supported by this release.

Connect provides screen sharing or a remote terminal; PCs need a chosen device name so they can be identified in the device list.

A USB-sized trial run

The downloadable live image can boot from USB with persistence, saving changes back to the stick.

Opinion: this could make a useful home-lab control station from hardware already on a shelf. Try the live environment and check your network, display, and peripherals before committing. This is announcement coverage, not a compatibility test.
