Signal / 033 — Steam gives completionists a finish line that can survive DLC
A finished game should not feel unfinished every time an expansion lands. Valve’s October 15, 2026 Steam Client Beta announcement introduces Achievement Sets: a way to organize and track achievements in separate groups. Valve says the changes are available on the web and in the opted-in beta client.
Separate the base game from the next side quest
The Steamworks documentation explains the useful distinction: developers can put DLC achievements in their own sets, restrict those goals to people who own that content, and archive retired achievements without removing them from players who earned them. Players who already completed a set keep that completion when more achievements are added.
This is not an automatic redesign of every game’s goals. Existing achievements stay in the base-game set unless a developer reorganizes them. Valve recommends adding new sets for new content, and says developers can configure sets without changing their game’s achievement API calls or updating the SDK.
sysVoid take
That is a small interface change with a welcome philosophy: let players finish something. A new challenge can be an invitation instead of a retroactive homework assignment. It is still a beta, so expect the presentation to evolve; we have not tested it ourselves. Escape the default—all-or-nothing progress bars included.
